The 16th annual Cruise Night Car Show and Street Party is set for this weekend, with rock-and-roll legends Sha Na Na leading the way. Cruise Night has become one of the premiere car shows in southern California drawing an estimated 35,000 visitors each year. Over 400 classic cars and trucks will be on display.
The event will be held on Saturday, July 18, from 5:30-10:30 pm on Brand Boulevard between Lexington and Broadway.
City spokesman Ritch Wells says Sha Na Na’s appearance this year carries a special significance for the group. “2009 marks the group’s 40th Anniversary of its appearance at the famed Woodstock Music Festival,” says Wells. “Sha Na Na always puts on a great show and we think nostalgia fans will want to celebrate this special milestone.” In addition to the 1969 Woodstock Festival, Sha Na Na also appeared in the movie “Grease” and hosted its own television series between 1977 and 1981.
Joining Sha Na Na as part of this year’s entertainment lineup will be the Jan and Dean Show featuring Dean Torrence. Torrence will play several of the duo’s original hits including “Surf City” and the “The Little Old Lady from Pasadena.” Opening this year’s entertainment will be the Four Preps whose million sellers include ‘26 Miles to Santa Catalina,’ a Southern California classic. This year’s emcee will once again be KRTH radio legend Brian Beirne, MR. ROCK N’ ROLL ®.
