Yesterday I wrote about some upcoming events from Glendale’s Park and Recreations department. Today I found even more! They’ve got all kinds of fun hiking activities coming up. They are also looking for volunteers to help prepare the city’s flood control for the rainy season. Rains this fall and winter may trigger large debris flows from the areas that were burned in the Station Fire. Whether you are looking to volunteer or just take a hike, there’s something for everyone this month.

The City of Glendale Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department is inviting the community to explore the hills of Glendale. On October 17, hikers will explore the Oakmont View trail (meet at the Oakmont View tennis courts), and on October 24, hikers will explore the Whiting Woods trail (meet at the end of Whiting Woods Rd.). The guided hikes will begin at 10:00 a.m., and will last approximately one hour. Space is limited, and hikers must register in advance. The Glendale Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department Trails & Open Space Programs will host a traditional campfire program featuring songs, skits and s’mores. “Here Come the Devil Winds!” will feature an in depth look at the Santa Ana winds of Southern California. The event will take place at Dunsmore Park, 4700 Dunsmore Avenue, La Crescenta, on Saturday, October 17 beginning at 6:00 p.m. All ages are welcomed, and admission is free. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently issued a statement that winter rainstorms may trigger large debris flows in hillside areas burned by the Station Fire. The burn area includes the Deukmejian Wilderness Park and property in the incorporated and unincorporated area of La Crescenta.

“The City of Glendale takes the debris flow threat very seriously and has been dedicating considerable resources and staff time to planning for and mitigating this threat,” says Glendale Public Works Director Steve Zurn. “We’ve reviewed the USGS report and we’re responding accordingly.”

The City of Glendale and Los Angeles County Public Works Departments are working to clean and prepare the City’s flood control and storm water collection and conveyance systems in preparation for the rain season. This includes the cleaning and maintenance of the main Dunsmuir debris basin along with over one thousand catch basins, 50 debris collection sites and several miles of storm drains.

Volunteer opportunities during the fall/winter season will include filling sand bags as part of the general winter weather preparation efforts. In the spring, volunteer opportunities at the Deukmejian Wilderness Park will include the removal of exotic plants, trail rehabilitation, tree planting, and park clean up. Click here to volunteer.
